# Triggering Loud Tone Upon Ring Detection

For analog phone users, you can configure an Algo 8305 to trigger loud ringing on Algo IP Speakers when a ring signal is received. You can also trigger other Algo devices, such as IP Visual Alerters or IP Displays, to improve visibility.

This is useful in noisy environments to ensure calls are noticed and answered promptly.

### Prerequisites

To use this feature, your 8305 firmware version should be 5.7 or later.

### Triggering Loud Tone Upon Ring Detection Using Multicast

In this example, when the analog phone receives a call, the 8305 detects the ring and plays a tone. The 8305 then multicasts the tone to the 8180.

When the analog phone stops ringing, the tone on the 8180 stops.

#### Connecting Your Devices

Use an RJ11 Y-splitter to connect the 8305 to your legacy communication system.

**To connect the devices:**

1. Connect an RJ11 Y-splitter to the legacy communication system’s TEL/FXS port.
2. Connect the two RJ11 outlets to the analog phone and the 8305 telephone port, respectively.
3. Connect the 8180 to a network switch.

#### Configuring the 8305

Configure the 8305 to play a pre-configured tone when ringing is detected and multicast the tone to the 8180.

**To configure the 8305:**

1. Log in to the 8305’s web interface.
2. Configure 8305 as a multicast transmitter:

  1. Go to **Basic Settings** → **Multicast** and configure the following:
    - **Multicast Mode**: Set as **Transmitter (Sender)**.
    - **Multicast Type**: Set as **Regular (RTP)**.
    - **Transmitter Single Zone**: Set a zone.
  2. Select **Save**.
3. Configure the ring detection action.
  1. Go to **Additional Features** → **Input/Output**.
  2. Configure **Ring Detection**:

    - **Action**: Set as **Play Tone**.

The 8305 detects the ring event but does not answer the call.
    - **Tone/Pre-recorded Announcement**: Select a tone to play when a ring is detected.
    - **Tone Duration**: Select how long the tone shall play.
      - **Play Once**: The audio file plays once per ring cycle, ignoring the ON/OFF cadence.
      - **Play While Held**: The audio follows the ring signal state. Audio plays only while the ring voltage is present.
4. Select **Save**.

#### Configuring the 8180

Configure the 8180 as a multicast receiver, listening to the multicast zone.

**To configure the 8180**

1. Log in to the 8180’s web interface.
2. Go to **Basic Settings** → **Multicast** and configure the following:

  - **Multicast Mode**: Set as **Receiver (Listener)**.
  - **Multicast Type**: Set as **Regular (RTP)**.
  - **Transmitter Single Zone**: Set a zone.
3. Select **Save**.

### Triggering Loud Tone Upon Ring Detection Using Relay Input/Output

In this example, when the analog phone receives a call, the 8305 detects the ringing and triggers loud ringing on the 8180 through its **Relay Output**.

When the analog phone stops ringing, the tone on the 8180 stops.

#### Connecting Your Devices

You need the following:

- An RJ11 Y-splitter to connect your legacy communication system and the 8305
- A single twisted pair (18 - 24 AWG) to connect the 8305 to the 8180
- A terminal block adapter to connect the twisted pair to the 8305 Relay Output

**To connect your devices:**

1. Connect an RJ11 Y-Splitter to your legacy communication system’s TEL/FXS port.
2. Connect the two RJ11 outlets to your analog phone and 8305’s telephone port, respectively.
3. Connect a terminal block adapter to the **Relay Output** of the 8305.
4. Connect the **Relay Output** ports of the 8305 to the **Relay Input** of 8180 using a single twisted pair.

#### Configuring the 8305

Configure the 8305 to detect ringing and trigger a loud tone on the 8180 via its **Relay Output**.

**To configure the 8305:**

1. Log in to the 8305’s web interface.
2. Configure the ring detection action.
  1. Go to **Additional Features** → **Input/Output**.
  2. Configure **Ring Detection**:

    - **Action**: Set as **Play Tone**.

The 8305 detects ringing but does not answer the call.
    - **Tone/Pre-recorded Announcement**: Select a tone to play on 8305 when a ring is detected.
      - If you do not want to play a tone on the 8305, select an audio file with no sound.
    - **Tone Duration**: Select how long the tone shall play.
      - **Play Once**: The audio file plays once per ring cycle, ignoring the ON/OFF cadence.
      - **Play While Held**: The audio follows the ring signal state. Audio plays only while the ring voltage is present.
3. Configure **Output Relay:**

  - **Output Relay**: Set as **Enabled**.
  - **Output Triggering Events**: Set as **Relay Active with Selected Events**.
  - **Relay Events**: Set as **Test Audio & Scheduled Events**.

> Note
> 
> The **Relay Output** will be triggered when:
> 
> - A ring is detected
> - A scheduled event is triggered
> - When you test play a tone under **Basic Settings** → **Feature** → **Ring/Alert Tone**.
> 
> If you want the **Relay Output** to trigger only when a ring is detected, avoid using the **Scheduler** and testing tone playback.

1. Select **Save**.

#### Configuring the 8180

Configure the 8180 to play a pre-configured tone when its **Relay Input** contacts are closed.

**To configure the 8180:**

1. Log in to the 8180’s web interface.
2. Go to **Additional Features** → **Input/Output** and configure the following:

  - **Relay Terminal Function**: Set as **Input**.
  - **Relay Input Mode**: Set as **Relay Normally Open**.
  - **Action**: Set as **Play Tone**.
  - **Tone/Pre-recorded Announcement**: Select a tone to play when a ring is detected.
  - **Tone Duration**: Select how the tone plays.
    - **Play Once**: The tone plays once per ring cycle, ignoring the ON/OFF cadence.
    - **Play While Held**: The tone follows the ring signal state. Audio plays only while the ring voltage is present (2 s).
    - **Play Until Completion:** The tone plays until it finishes. If the input relay is triggered again while the tone is still playing, playback continues without restarting.
3. Select **Save**.

### FAQ

#### How can I trigger other devices to improve visibility?

Depending on the device type, you can activate them in several ways:

- Multicast
- Relay Input/Output
- API calls

Configure the 8305 to play a tone when a ring is detected. Then use one of the following methods to trigger other devices:

- Configure the 8305 as a multicast transmitter and set other devices as multicast receivers to trigger audio alerts, light strobes, IP Displays, and similar devices.
- Use the Relay Input/Output ports to connect the 8305 to an IP Speaker. Then trigger other devices using API calls from the IP Speaker (as part of the IP Speaker’s **Relay Input** action).
- Use the Relay Input/Output ports to connect the 8305 to an IP Speaker. Then trigger other devices using multicast from the IP Speaker.
- Use the Relay Input/Output ports to connect the 8305 to an IP Speaker. Then connect additional devices to the IP Speaker’s **Relay Output**.

This requires that your IP Speaker have both **Relay Output** and **Relay Inpu**t ports.
