Guide to Power and Performance of Algo IP Devices

When configuring an Algo product, it is important to understand that the power source used (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) can impact a device’s performance.

When configuring a device, the web interface options will not change based on the power source. Therefore, it is possible to set configurations that do not perform as expected. To check the power source from the web interface before configuration, see the Status page.

Outlined below are some limitations of performance based on power for Algo devices that are compatible with more than one type of power source.

PoE vs. PoE+ vs. PoE++

The power source required for optimal performance of Algo IP devices is dependent on the functions and features of the individual device.

The difference between power inputs is described in the table below:

PoE

PoE+

PoE++ Type 3

PoE++ Type 4

IEEE Standard

802.3af

802.3at

802.3bt

802.3at

Power available at device

12.95 W

25.50 W

51 W

71.3 W

Based on these power parameters, Algo recommends the power sources listed in the table below for Algo IP devices. It should be noted that any device can use a high power source if desired, however, there will be no performance benefit:

Satellite Speakers

Main Power vs. Audio Power

It is important to note the difference between maximum power input and maximum audio power for all Algo IP speakers. The maximum audio power for the main speaker will always be lower than the power input to the main device. The additional power that is not used for audio is used by the other electronic functions required for by the speaker.

When using satellite speakers with any 819X  (8196, 8198) device, only the maximum audio power of the main 819X speaker will be shared with connected 119X speakers.

For example, the 8196 IP PoE+ Horn Speaker has maximum power of 25.5W but maximum audio power of 16W. If used with 1196 satellite speakers, the power will distributed as follows:

Single 8196 Speaker

8196 + 1 x 1196 Satellite

8196 + 2 x 1196 Satellites

8196 + 3 x 1196 Satellites

PoE+ Max Audio Power

16 W

8 W each

5.3 W each

4 W each

Wiring and Attenuation

The distance of a satellite speaker from the main speaker (power source) will impact audio performance. The recommended limit between speakers connected by daisy chain is 50 ft, where the third satellite speakers is a maximum distance of 150 ft from the main speaker.

A maximum spacing of 50 ft will keep power loss below 1dB, which is considered insignificant.

Display Speakers

The power used by display speakers (8410, 8420) is primarily distributed between three core areas: the display, the speakers, and the strobe light. Depending on the power source, the maximum levels of each of these features will vary.

When configuring the device in the web interface, parameters will not be restricted based on the power source. It is important to know the limitations of the parameters based on the power source for accurate expected results.
